Job Title: Part-Time Field Organizer
FLSA: Non-exempt/hourly/Part Time/Regular
Hours: 10 hours per week
The Awood Center is looking for a Pat Time Field Organizer to build and coordinate a Minnesota-wide coalition of organizations and community activists to counter companies such as Amazon’s growing power.
The Awood (the Somali word for “power”) Center is a dynamic worker-led organization that creates a culturally and linguistically relevant space to build unity and develop the next generation of leaders in Minnesota’s diverse East African communities. The Awood Center is engaging the community of 100,000 and growing recent immigrants and their families in the Twin-Cities area by educating, organizing, developing leadership and mobilizing to improve the economic and political life of the community and all working people. Responsibilities
Coalition Development and Management
- Develop and maintain meaningful partnership with organizations who share an interest in an economy where working people can thrive and a democracy in which we can all participate
- Seek input from coalition members to create a shared strategy, calendar, and messaging
- Plan and lead coalition meetings and events
- Communicate regularly with coalition members
Policy Advocacy
- Track political and economic developments in the state of Minnesota
- Work with coalition members to manage legislative outreach about good jobs, antimonopoly policy, environmental justice, etc.
- Produce campaign and educational materials
Public Education and Communication
- Coordinate participation in days of action and mass popular education
- Partner with coalition members to identify and prepare spokespeople from frontline communities
- Represent the coalition in public spaces
Qualifications
- At least two years of grassroots organizing or advocacy experience.
- Strong listening, persuasion and facilitation skills.
- Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people as well as an understanding of the daily challenges faced by low-income communities of color.
- Ability to work independently, navigate obstacles, discern priorities, meet competing deadlines and handle multiple projects.
- Strong organizational and database management skills.
- Political, social, and economic understanding of Minnesota a plus.
- Familiarity with social media engagement and organizing strategies is a plus.
- Ability to work varied hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Bilingual( Somali,Afan Oromo,Amharic,Arabic or Ksahili ) is a plus
