Know Your Rights: A Community Training for Somali Families in St. Paul

In moments of uncertainty, information matters. Preparation matters. Community matters.

That is why the Awood Center is hosting a second “Know Your Rights” training for the Somali American community in St. Paul.

This training is designed to give families clear, practical information about their constitutional rights and how to respond if approached by immigration enforcement. It will be led by an immigration attorney and will provide interpretation to ensure everyone can fully participate.

This is not a political event. It is a public education event focused on safety, clarity, and preparedness.

Why This Training Matters

Across the country, immigrant communities are navigating uncertainty around immigration enforcement. There is confusion about what ICE can and cannot do, what warrants mean, and how constitutional protections apply in real-life situations.

Many people simply want to know:

  • What are my rights?
  • What should I say?
  • What should I not say?
  • How do I protect my family?
  • What happens if ICE comes to my workplace or home?

This training is designed to answer those questions directly and plainly.

What Will Be Covered

The session will focus on practical knowledge, including:

  • Your constitutional rights under the 4th and 5th Amendments
  • What ICE can and cannot legally do
  • The difference between public and private spaces
  • The difference between court warrants and administrative warrants
  • How to stay safe if approached by immigration enforcement
  • What to say — and what not to say
  • Family and workplace safety planning
  • Q&A with immigration attorneys

The goal is simple: give people accurate information so they can make informed decisions.

Building Safety Through Knowledge

Know Your Rights trainings are not about fear. They are about preparation. When people understand their rights, they are better equipped to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.

The Awood Center has long worked with immigrant and East African workers in Minnesota. This training continues that mission — ensuring that families have access to legal knowledge and practical tools during challenging moments.

Information is power. Community is protection.
